E-40 waterway is a modern route from the Varangians to the Greeks that opens new possibilities for development of trade, cross-border tourism and multicultural dialogue to Belarus, Poland, Ukraine and other countries.

During eleven months, the consortium has to assess whether it is feasible to use the E40 connection and offer three scenarios to restore this waterway. The Maritime Institute in Gdansk formed a consortium together with the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (Germany), National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, State Enterprise ChernomoNIIproekt (Ukraine), and European-Ukrainian Business and Innovation Agency (Germany). The partners will determine their specific responsibilities at a meeting in February 2015.

The water artery E40 passes through Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine, connecting the ports of Gdansk and Kherson via the rivers Vistula, Bug, Pripyat, and Dnieper. However, today it is almost impossible for ships to sail along its section on the Bug River, between Warsaw and Brest. This part of the E40 also crosses areas included in the European nature protection network Natura 2000. Therefore, planning and construction works there require very detailed preparation.

The restored E40 waterway will enable to ship up to 4 mln. tons of cargo annually; this should greatly facilitate trade between Belarus, Poland, and Ukraine. The inland water transport is quite economical in terms of fuel consumption; besides, this means of transportation is also suitable for carrying even the most massive goods. One more expected benefit is the development of an up-to-date logistics infrastructure in the border regions of the three neighboring countries.

In order to perform all the necessary works the consortium will be granted € 493 000. The consortium is entitled to use this money as a winner of an international competition to study the E40 restoration.  The funds are provided by the European Union within the project on the revitalization of the E40 waterway. The enterprise Dnepro-Bug Waterway is the lead partner in the project.

For instance, the Maritime Institute in Gdansk has been working on issues of water transportation economics for more than 50 years, while the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics boasts successful projects realized not only in Europe, but also in China and Persian Gulf states”, noted Nikolai Kotetsky, Head of Dnepro-Bug Waterway.
