A canal between Belarus and Poland has to be built in order to connect the Baltic and the Black Seas



Navigation along the rivers of Poland, Belarus and Ukraine can be restored in case a new canal is built between the Vistula in Poland and the Dnieper-Bug Canal in Belarus. This was the main conclusion put forth by the experts of the Commission on the Development of the E40 Waterway on the Dnieper-Vistula section who came together for a working meeting in Lutsk (Ukraine) on June 15-17.

Restoration of the E40 waterway was discussed at a parliamentary conference of the Council of the Baltic Sea States

Benefits associated with the restoration were presented at the conference by RUMCE  "Dnepro-Bug Waterway". The conference took place in Olsztyn, on August 26. The restored waterway should become a new trade route between the ports on the Baltic and Black Seas and enable to transport up to 4 million tons of cargo.

The project of restoration of the waterway E40 was presented in Bydgoszcz, Poland

The initiative was presented by RUMCEDnepro-Bug Waterway" at the Second International Conference and Self-government Assembly “WaterWays Expo 2014”. The eventwas held in Bydgoszcz on June 10-12 and was focused on development prospects for the inland water connections  in Poland and Eastern Europe.

The project on the E40 waterway restoration was presented in Brussels

The presentation was delivered within “The Eastern Partnership Days” which were held in the capital of the European Union from November 4 until November 6. For the second time in a row, this event was organized by the East Poland House in Brussels.

An international consortium headed by the Maritime Institute in Gdansk is to look into the possibility to revive a water artery between the Baltic and Black Seas

On January 29, in Minsk, the Belarusian enterprise Dnepro-Bug Waterway, which ordered a study on the revival, signed a contract with the Maritime Institute in Gdansk, which heads the consortium. The experts are going to analyze economic, technical, environmental, and other conditions influencing the restoration of the water artery E40 between Gdansk and Kherson. Their conclusions are expected to be presented by the end of 2015.   

EU co-financing to help Belarus, Poland and Ukraine to plan restoration of the E40 waterway on the Dnieper-Vistula section

The project, which aims to develop and approve an optimal scenario for the restoration of an important international arterial waterway E40 on the section Dnieper-Vistula-Oder, is funded by the European Union within the Poland-Belarus-Ukraine cross-border cooperation programme for 2007-2013. The project is being implemented by the Republican unitary maintenance and construction enterprise "Dnepro-Bug  Waterway" in partnership with regional authorities, organizations that deal with management of water resources, as well as civil society organizations from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. The project is supported by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Belarus, Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Poland, and Ministry of Transportation and Communication of Ukraine. 

International experts started to plan restoration of the E40 Dnieper-Vistula waterway

First steps on the way to the restoration of an important international arterial waterway E40 on the section Dnieper-Vistula were discussed in Pinsk (Belarus) on 3-4 February. Participants of the working meeting included experts of regional authorities, organizations that deal with management of water resources and civil society organizations from the Brest region (Belarus), Lubelskie Voivodeship (Poland) and Volyn region (Ukraine). All these institutions act as partners in the project “Restoration of the E40 waterway on the Dnieper-Vistula section: from strategy to planning”.

An international tender on restoration scenarios for the waterway E40 is now open


Bids are to be submitted from June 13 until July 11, 2014. The winner will receive up to 493.000 Euro to prepare three feasible options how to reconstruct the water route, which is now unnavigable on the Western Bug section between Warsaw and Brest. The most efficient and ecological scenario will be approved by the end of 2015. It will be used as a basis for planning improvements of hydro technical contructions.

International conference on restoration of the water connection between the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea to take place in Brest


On 27-28 March 2014, Brest regional executive committee will host an international inaugural conference and first session of the Commission on the development of the E40 waterway on the Dnieper-Vistula section. The list of invitees includes representatives of international organizations, diplomatic missions, Ministries of Transport, Infrastructure and Development, Ministries of Nature and Environmental Protection, water management departments, regional and local authorities from territories through which the E40 waterway passes, as well as Euroregions, research institutions, public organizations from Belarus, Poland, Ukraine and Germany.

A conference on restoration of the E40 waterway, linking the Baltic and Black Seas, was held at the Polish Parliament


More than 100 politicians, high-ranking officials, diplomats and experts from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine took part in the conference “Baltic Sea – Black Sea: Restoration of the Water Route E40”, which was conducted at the Polish Parliament in Warsaw on May 22, 2014. The participants spoke in favor of making the transport artery fully functioning and appealed to the Government, President, Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland for backing the initiative.
